Mt Aspiring National Park is a rugged wilderness of glaciers, alpine peaks, and beech forests, centered on the iconic 3,033-metre Mt Aspiring. Part of Te Wahipounamu World Heritage area, it offers some of New Zealand's most spectacular tramping and climbing, with trails that wind through river valleys, past waterfalls, and up to high passes with views that will leave you breathless.
Highlights & What to See
- Rob Roy Glacier Track – A relatively short walk through beech forest to a stunning view of the glacier and its cascading icefalls.
- Gillespie Pass Circuit – A challenging 3–4 day tramp through the heart of the park, crossing high alpine passes with panoramic views.
- Dart River Valley – Jet boat or kayak through this remote valley, with towering peaks on both sides and the chance to see ancient rock art.
- Blue Pools Track – An easy walk to crystal-clear turquoise pools on the Makarora River, perfect for a refreshing dip.
- Mt Aspiring Climb – For experienced mountaineers, the summit of Mt Aspiring is a classic alpine ascent requiring technical skills and a guide.
- That Wanaka Tree – While just outside the park, this famous lone willow tree in Lake Wanaka is a must-photograph stop on your way.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors explore the park on day walks from Wanaka. For a taste, allow at least two days: one for the Rob Roy Glacier Track and another for the Blue Pools and a scenic drive up the Matukituki Valley. If you're keen on a multi-day tramp, budget 3–5 days for the Gillespie Pass or Routeburn Track (which starts near Glenorchy). The park is best visited from November to April when the weather is milder and tracks are snow-free.
