Manapouri is a serene lakeside settlement on the shores of Lake Manapouri, New Zealand’s second deepest lake. With Fiordland National Park as its backyard, this tiny village is a gateway to some of the country’s most dramatic wilderness. It’s quieter than Te Anau, offering a more intimate base for exploring Doubtful Sound and the Kepler Track. The lake itself is a stunning shade of deep blue, framed by forested mountains and dotted with islands — a photographer’s dream.
Highlights & What to See
- Doubtful Sound — take a day cruise or overnight trip into this remote, fiord wilderness, often less crowded than Milford Sound.
- Lake Manapouri — kayak or take a scenic boat trip across the lake to explore its many islands and secluded coves.
- Kepler Track — one of New Zealand’s Great Walks, with trailheads near Manapouri; a three-day circuit through beech forest and alpine ridges.
- Manapouri Power Station — an underground hydroelectric marvel; tours depart from the lakefront.
- Roys Peak — a challenging day hike near Wanaka offering panoramic views of Lake Wanaka and the Southern Alps (accessible from Wanaka, 1.5 hours north).
- That Wanaka Tree — the iconic lone willow in Lake Wanaka, perfect for sunrise photography (located in Wanaka, 1.5 hours north).
Suggested Time to Spend
Spend at least two full days in Manapouri: one for a Doubtful Sound cruise (allow 8-10 hours) and another for a Kepler Track day hike or a kayaking adventure on the lake. If you’re doing the full Kepler Track, budget three days. Manapouri is a peaceful stop for one night if you’re passing through, but it truly rewards those who linger.
