Makarora is a tiny settlement at the northern end of Lake Wanaka, where the Makarora River meets the lake. It's the gateway to Mount Aspiring National Park and a perfect stop for those driving the Haast Pass route between Wanaka and the West Coast. Surrounded by beech forests, alpine peaks, and clear rivers, this is a place for nature lovers and hikers.
Highlights & What to See
- Blue Pools Walk: An easy 30-minute walk through beech forest to swing bridges over crystal-clear blue pools – a classic photo stop.
- Young River Walk: A short track to a stunning waterfall and river views, ideal for a quick leg-stretch.
- Makarora River: Perfect for fishing (brown trout) or just soaking up the tranquil scenery.
- Makarora Whitewater: For thrill-seekers, jet boat tours and rafting trips operate on the river.
- Mount Aspiring National Park: The park's northern boundary is right here, offering wilderness hiking and camping.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1–2 hours stopping for short walks and photos en route to Wanaka or the West Coast. If you're keen on a longer hike or jet boating, plan for half a day. It's not a place to stay overnight unless you're camping or using the basic lodge.
