Stretching 55 km along the dramatic shores of Lake Dunstan, this world-class cycling and walking trail offers jaw-dropping views of turquoise waters, steep schist cliffs, and the rugged Central Otago landscape. Opened in 2021, the trail quickly became a must-do for active travellers, combining engineering marvels – think cantilevered sections clinging to cliffs – with the raw beauty of New Zealand's South Island. Whether you tackle the whole thing or just a scenic section, you'll be rewarded with a sense of remoteness that feels a world away from Wanaka's bustle.
Highlights & What to See
- Cromwell to Clyde section: The most dramatic part, with cliff-hugging boardwalks and panoramic lake views.
- Bannockburn Bridge: A striking suspension bridge that spans the lake, offering a thrilling crossing.
- Historic gold-mining relics: Spot old sluicing sites and stone huts that echo the region's gold-rush past.
- Wildlife spotting: Keep an eye out for black-backed gulls, hawks, and the occasional wild goat on the hillsides.
- Roys Peak: For a different perspective, combine your trail ride with a hike up this iconic Wanaka peak.
- That Wanaka Tree: After your ride, snap a photo of the famous lone willow in Wanaka's lake.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most cyclists complete the full 55 km point-to-point in 4–6 hours, but you can easily break it into a full-day adventure with picnics and photo stops. If you're short on time, the 15 km section from Cromwell to the Bannockburn Bridge makes a rewarding half-day ride. Walkers should allow two days to cover the whole trail, staying overnight in Clyde. Book a shuttle for the one-way route, or ride out and back from Cromwell for a shorter loop.
