Isthmus Peak Track
Few day hikes in New Zealand deliver the sheer jaw-dropping payoff of the Isthmus Peak Track. This 16 km return tramp climbs steadily through golden tussock and alpine meadows to a summit that commands a split-level view: on one side, the deep blue of Lake Hāwea; on the other, the braided fingers of Lake Wānaka. The trail is challenging but not technical — think steep switchbacks rather than rock scrambles — and the sense of remoteness is intoxicating, even though you’re only a short drive from Wānaka township.
Highlights & What to See
- The summit panorama — the classic two-lakes view is one of the best in the Southern Lakes, especially in late afternoon light.
- Tussock-clad slopes that turn amber and gold in autumn, contrasting with the deep green of beech forest remnants.
- Wildlife encounters — keep an eye out for South Island robins, kea (if you’re lucky), and the occasional hawk riding the thermals.
- Lake Hāwea lookout about halfway up, a great spot to catch your breath and snap a photo of the turquoise water far below.
- The quiet — far fewer people than Roy’s Peak, especially on weekdays, so you can enjoy the alpine silence.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most walkers need 5–7 hours return, depending on fitness and photo stops. Start early (before 8am) to avoid the midday sun and afternoon winds that can whip across the ridge. The track is a steady uphill grind, so pace yourself — the descent is steep on the knees. If you’re short on time or energy, you can still enjoy the lower section’s lake views and turn around at the saddle.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Roy’s Peak Track — the more famous (and crowded) cousin, offering a different perspective over Lake Wānaka.
- That Wānaka Tree — the iconic lone willow in the lake, a quick photo stop on the way back into town.
- Lake Hāwea township — a peaceful spot for a post-hike coffee or a swim in summer.
- Wānaka town centre — refuel at one of the excellent cafés (try Federal Diner for brunch) or browse the galleries.
- Mount Aspiring National Park — a short drive west, with world-class tramping routes like the Rob Roy Glacier Track.
