Hawea is a serene lakeside settlement on the shores of Lake Hāwea, a stunning turquoise body of water framed by the Southern Alps. Just a short drive from Wanaka, it offers a quieter alternative with spectacular alpine scenery, excellent fishing, and a range of outdoor activities. The lake itself is a gem, perfect for kayaking, paddleboarding, or simply soaking in the views.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend a half-day to a full day exploring Hawea, often as a side trip from Wanaka. If you're keen on hiking the Isthmus Peak Track, set aside a full day for the 8-hour return walk. For a relaxed visit, a few hours by the lake or a short kayak trip is plenty. Combine with a stop at the Hāwea Store for a coffee or ice cream.
