Nestled in the heart of Central Otago, the Cromwell Wine Region is a sun-soaked haven for wine lovers, where the dramatic landscapes of schist rock and turquoise lakes meet rows of pinot noir vines. This is New Zealand’s most southerly wine region, and its arid, continental climate produces some of the country’s most celebrated cool-climate wines. Beyond the cellar doors, you’ll find historic gold-mining heritage, farmers’ markets bursting with stone fruit, and a laid-back, foodie culture that makes it an essential stop on any South Island road trip.
Highlights & What to See
- Pinot Noir Trail – Explore over 40 cellar doors, from boutique family-run vineyards to iconic names like Felton Road and Mt Difficulty. Many offer tastings with panoramic views of the Kawarau Gorge.
- Old Cromwell Town – Step back in time at this restored historic precinct, with heritage buildings, artisan shops, and the famous Cromwell Farmers’ Market (Sundays) – a feast of local cheeses, preserves, and seasonal apricots.
- Lake Dunstan – Cycle or stroll the Lake Dunstan Trail, a stunning 55-km route that hugs the lake’s edge, passing vineyards and rocky cliffs. Rent an e-bike for an effortless ride.
- Bannockburn Sluicings – Hike through this eerie gold-mining landscape of abandoned water races and tailings, with interpretive signs explaining the region’s 1860s gold rush.
- Gibbston Valley – Just a short drive west, this sub-region is home to the Gibbston Valley Winery & Cheese, where you can pair pinot with local artisan cheese in a cave cellar.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan at least a full day to do the region justice – half a day for wine tasting and lunch at a vineyard, then the rest exploring Old Cromwell and the Lake Dunstan Trail. If you’re a keen cyclist or wine enthusiast, two days allow you to tackle the full trail and visit Gibbston Valley. Cromwell works perfectly as a one-night stop between Queenstown and Wanaka, or as a day trip from either town.
