Otematata is a small settlement perched on the shores of Lake Aviemore in the Waitaki Valley, a gateway to the dramatic landscapes of the Mackenzie Country. This unassuming town is a base for exploring the Waitaki hydro lakes, the Ahuriri Conservation Park, and the surreal rock formations of the Omarama area. With its quiet atmosphere and easy access to outdoor adventures, Otematata offers a peaceful stop on a South Island road trip.
Highlights & What to See
- Lake Aviemore & Lake Benmore: Drive across the Benmore Dam – one of the largest earth dams in the Southern Hemisphere – and take in panoramic views of the turquoise lakes and the surrounding tussock-covered hills. Fishing, kayaking, and picnicking are popular here.
- Ahuriri Conservation Park: A short drive inland, this high-country park offers stunning tramping trails through beech forest and alpine meadows, with chances to spot kea and tahr.
- Omarama Clay Cliffs: Eerie, hoodoo-like pinnacles of layered gravel and clay that glow gold in the late afternoon light. A 20-minute walk leads to the base of these formations.
- Waitaki Valley Wine Trail: The valley’s cool climate produces excellent pinot noir and riesling. Visit cellar doors like Ostler or Valli for tastings amid vineyard views.
- Oamaru – Victorian Precinct & Blue Penguins: An hour east, Oamaru’s beautifully preserved limestone buildings house galleries and craft breweries, while the nightly penguin parade at the harbour is a must-see.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors use Otematata as a one-night stopover while travelling between Christchurch and Queenstown or the West Coast. A full day here allows time to explore the lakes, walk the Clay Cliffs, and enjoy a wine tasting; two days give you the chance to tackle a longer tramp in Ahuriri Conservation Park or kayak on Lake Benmore.
