Mount Cook (Aoraki) is New Zealand’s highest peak and the heart of the Southern Alps, a place where glaciers grind down valleys and the night sky blazes with stars. This is raw alpine grandeur – think iceberg-dotted lakes, avalanche-scarred ridges, and hiking trails that deliver you face-to-face with the mountain. Whether you’re a hardcore tramper or a casual day-tripper, the scale of this landscape will leave you humbled.
Highlights & What to See
- Hooker Valley Track – The quintessential walk: gentle, three hours return, with swing bridges, alpine tussock, and a final view of icebergs floating on Hooker Lake beneath the mountain’s north face.
- Tasman Glacier & Lake – A short walk leads to the terminal lake of New Zealand’s longest glacier. You can kayak among icebergs (guided tours) or just marvel at the blue ice.
- Kea Point Track – A 45-minute stroll to a viewpoint over Mueller Glacier’s moraine wall; keep an eye out for cheeky kea parrots.
- Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre – A museum and planetarium celebrating the mountaineer who trained on these slopes; the 3D movie is a hit on rainy days.
- Glacier Explorers – Boat tours that weave through icebergs on Tasman Lake – the only way to get up close to glacial ice without crampons.
- Stargazing – The Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve offers some of the clearest night skies on Earth. Join an evening tour at the Mt Cook Observatory.
- Sealy Tarns Track – A steep, stair-heavy climb (2–3 hours return) rewarded with mirror-like tarns reflecting Aoraki – hard work but unforgettable.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend one full day and one night – enough for the Hooker Valley Track and a stargazing session. If you have two days, add the Tasman Glacier walk and a glacier boat tour. Trampers wanting to tackle the Mueller Hut or Ball Pass Route should budget 2–3 days. Many people base themselves in Twizel or Lake Tekapo and do Mount Cook as a day trip, but staying overnight in the village lets you experience the valley in the quiet evening hours.

- Lake Pukaki – The turquoise lake you drive past en route – stop at the viewpoint for classic postcard shots of Mount Cook reflected in the water.
- Omarama – 45 minutes south, a small town known for clay cliffs, hot pools, and gliding (soaring over the Alps).
- Wanaka – 2.5 hours southwest, a lakeside town with great walks, the Puzzling World, and access to Mount Aspiring National Park.
