Milford Sound is a spectacular fiord in the heart of Fiordland National Park, often described as the 'eighth wonder of the world.' Carved by ancient glaciers, its sheer cliffs plunge into dark waters, while waterfalls like Stirling Falls and Lady Bowen Falls cascade hundreds of meters. The dramatic scenery is best experienced by boat, kayak, or scenic flight, and the journey to get here via the Homer Tunnel is an adventure in itself.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend a full day on a cruise (2–3 hours) and the drive from Te Anau (2 hours each way). If you want to kayak or do a longer walk, plan for an overnight stay. The fiord is often rainy, but that's when the waterfalls are most dramatic—embrace the weather!
