Lake Aviemore is a serene hydro lake on the Waitaki River, nestled between the more famous Lake Benmore and Lake Waitaki. With its turquoise waters, rugged hills, and dramatic rock formations, it offers a quieter escape for those seeking unspoiled nature and outdoor adventures. The lake is a haven for water sports, fishing, and stargazing, thanks to its location in the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

A half-day to a full day is enough to explore Lake Aviemore’s highlights. If you’re cycling or kayaking, plan for 3–4 hours on the water or trail. For a relaxed visit, combine a picnic with a short walk and some fishing. Overnight camping is recommended if you want to fully experience the dark skies – just bring your own supplies as there are no shops nearby.
