Kakanui is a sleepy coastal settlement on the Otago coast, where the Kakanui River meets the Pacific Ocean. It's the kind of place where you come to unwind, with a long sandy beach, a historic river mouth, and a palpable sense of small-town New Zealand. The local pub and fish-and-chip shop are the social hubs, and the surrounding landscape – from rolling farmland to dramatic sea cliffs – is pure, unspoiled Otago.
Highlights & What to See
- Kakanui Beach – a sweeping, dark-sand beach perfect for long walks, swimming in summer, and spotting seabirds. The river mouth is a great spot for kayaking or paddleboarding.
- Kakanui River Estuary – a wildlife haven, home to royal spoonbills, white-faced herons, and the occasional kotuku (white heron). Walk the short estuary loop track for the best views.
- Historic Kakanui Bridge – a picturesque single-lane bridge that crosses the river, offering a classic photo op and access to the beach on the south side.
- Local Seafood – grab fresh fish and chips from the Kakanui Takeaways, a local institution, and eat them on the beach as the sun sets.
- Moeraki Boulders – just a 20-minute drive south, these massive, spherical boulders scattered on Koekohe Beach are a must-see geological wonder.
Suggested Time to Spend
Kakanui is a half-day stop or a low-key overnight. If you're driving the coastal route from Oamaru to Dunedin, allow 2–3 hours to stretch your legs on the beach, grab a bite, and explore the estuary. For a more relaxed pace, book a room at the Kakanui Hotel or a nearby holiday park and spend a full day beachcombing, fishing, and watching the sunset.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Oamaru – 25 minutes north, famous for its Victorian precinct, steampunk scene, and the little blue penguin colony.
- Moeraki – 20 minutes south, home to the iconic Moeraki Boulders and a working fishing village with excellent seafood.
- Katiki Point – a short drive south, where you can see fur seals, sea lions, and yellow-eyed penguins at the lighthouse reserve.
- Waitaki Valley – head inland from Oamaru to explore limestone formations, wineries, and the dramatic Waitaki River.
