Scattered across a sunny paddock in North Otago, the Elephant Rocks are a surreal jumble of giant limestone boulders that look like a herd of ancient elephants frozen mid-stride. Weathered into smooth, bulbous shapes by millennia of wind and rain, these creamy-white formations create an otherworldly landscape that feels like a natural sculpture park. It's a place that rewards a slow wander – the rocks change character with every angle, and the silence is broken only by sheep bleating in the distance.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Give yourself 45 minutes to an hour to fully explore the rocks – it's not a huge area, but you'll want time to clamber around and soak up the strange atmosphere. Combine it with a visit to the Vanished World Centre (30 minutes) and a coffee in Duntroon, and you can easily fill a relaxed half-day detour from the main highway.
