Dunedin, the 'Edinburgh of the South', is a city of Victorian and Edwardian architecture, a thriving student culture, and a dramatic Otago Peninsula teeming with wildlife. It's a place where you can explore a castle, spot a royal albatross, and sample a world-famous chocolate fish all in one day.
Highlights & What to See
- Otago Peninsula – A scenic drive with incredible wildlife: the world's only mainland royal albatross colony at Taiaroa Head, yellow-eyed penguins, and New Zealand fur seals.
- Larnach Castle – New Zealand's only castle, with beautiful gardens and panoramic views over the peninsula.
- Dunedin Railway Station – A magnificent Flemish Renaissance building; catch the Taieri Gorge Railway for a spectacular journey through river gorges.
- Cadbury World – A chocolate-lover's tour (book ahead) at the Cadbury factory, home to the famous Cadbury chocolate fish.
- Baldwin Street – The world's steepest residential street – a must for a photo and a leg-burning climb.
- Toitu Otago Settlers Museum – A free museum telling the story of Otago's people, with vintage cars and interactive exhibits.
Suggested Time to Spend
Give Dunedin at least two full days. Spend day one exploring the city: the railway station, the museum, and a stroll through the historic Octagon. On day two, dedicate the morning to the Otago Peninsula – you can drive it in a few hours, but allow longer for wildlife stops. If you have a third day, take the Taieri Gorge train or drive inland to the Central Otago goldfields.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Oamaru – A Victorian precinct and blue penguin colony, about 1.5 hours north.
- Moeraki Boulders – Mysterious spherical boulders on the beach, a short detour north of Dunedin.
- The Catlins – Rugged coastline, waterfalls, and petrified forest, a day trip south.
- Central Otago – Historic towns like St Bathans and Naseby, about 2 hours inland.
- Taieri Gorge – The scenic train journey itself is a highlight; combine with a visit to Middlemarch.
