Te Anau is the gateway to Fiordland National Park and the starting point for some of New Zealand's most spectacular wilderness experiences. Nestled on the shores of Lake Te Anau, the largest lake in the South Island, this small town offers a relaxed base for exploring the dramatic fiords, ancient forests, and pristine waters of the region. With its stunning lake views, abundant birdlife, and proximity to Milford and Doubtful Sounds, Te Anau is a must-visit for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Te Anau deserves at least two full days to experience its main attractions. Spend one day on a Milford Sound cruise (allow 8–10 hours round trip) and another exploring the glowworm caves or a short hike on the Kepler Track. If you have a third day, consider a Doubtful Sound excursion, which takes a full day. For those short on time, a single overnight stay can cover the glowworm caves and a lake cruise, but you'll want longer to fully appreciate the fiords.
