Kawarau Bungy is the world's first commercial bungy jump, a heart-stopping 43-metre leap from the historic Kawarau Bridge. Since 1988, AJ Hackett's pioneering adventure has drawn thrill-seekers to plunge towards the turquoise waters of the Kawarau River. It's a rite of passage for adrenaline junkies and a must-do on any Queenstown itinerary.
Highlights & What to See
- The Bungy Jump: Take the plunge from the iconic bridge – you can touch the river or go completely under (the 'touch' option is a popular choice).
- Spectator Viewing Platform: Even if you're not jumping, the platform offers front-row views of the action and the stunning river gorge.
- The Historic Bridge: Built in 1880, the Kawarau Bridge is a heritage structure with a fascinating gold-rush history.
- Kawarau River: The vivid blue-green river below is perfect for photos and adds to the drama of the jump.
- AJ Hackett Bungy Centre: Watch videos of past jumps, browse memorabilia, and gear up at the on-site base.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend about 1–2 hours here, including check-in, the jump (or watching), and soaking up the atmosphere. If you're jumping, allow extra time for wavering and the inevitable adrenaline comedown. It's easy to combine with a half-day trip from Queenstown, as the site is just 20 minutes' drive from town.
