Kawarau Bridge, a slender steel span arcing 43 metres above the churning turquoise waters of the Kawarau River, is the birthplace of commercial bungy jumping. Since AJ Hackett strapped on a cord here in 1988, this historic bridge has drawn thrill-seekers from across the globe. Even if you don’t leap, the energy of the jumpers and the sheer drama of the gorge make it a quintessential Queenstown stop.
Highlights & What to See
- Bungy Jumping: Take the plunge from the 43-metre-high bridge – the original bungy site. You can touch the river, or go for a full dunk, and the staff are experts at coaxing even the most hesitant jumpers.
- Kawarau River: The milky-blue river below is a stunning sight, carved through rugged schist cliffs. Watch jumpers from the viewing platform, or just soak in the raw natural beauty of the gorge.
- Historic Bridge: Built in 1880, this single-lane suspension bridge was once a key link for gold miners. Its wooden deck and ironwork have been beautifully preserved, and it’s still open to pedestrians.
- AJ Hackett Bungy Centre: The base camp offers a café with river views, a shop selling bungy memorabilia, and a small museum tracing the sport’s origins. Grab a coffee and watch the action for free.
Suggested Time to Spend
If you’re jumping, allow 1–2 hours for the experience, including check-in, suiting up, and the jump itself. If you’re just watching, 30 minutes is plenty to see a few jumps and snap photos. It’s an ideal quick stop on the way to or from Gibbston Valley wineries or Arrowtown, so you can easily combine it with a half-day loop from Queenstown.
