Oamaru

Oamaru, a charming Victorian-era port town on New Zealand’s South Island east coast, is a delightful blend of architectural heritage, quirky wildlife, and creative energy. Its historic precinct, built from creamy local limestone, feels frozen in the late 19th century, while the nearby blue penguin colony offers one of the country’s most endearing wildlife encounters. Oamaru is also the gateway to the Waitaki Valley’s wineries and the dramatic Moeraki Boulders.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Two days is ideal: spend one day exploring the Victorian precinct and visiting the blue penguin colony in the evening, and a second day for a side trip to the Moeraki Boulders and Bushy Beach. If you’re pressed for time, Oamaru can be enjoyed as a stopover of a few hours on a drive between Christchurch and Dunedin, but the penguin viewing is best at dusk.
