Nugget Point
Perched on the rugged Otago coastline, Nugget Point is one of New Zealand's most dramatic and photogenic landmarks. A short but exhilarating walk leads to a historic lighthouse perched on a rocky promontory, with sweeping views of the wild Pacific Ocean. The iconic 'nuggets' – islets of jagged rock – dot the shoreline, often bustling with wildlife. This is a place where the elements feel raw and untamed, and the roar of the sea is constant.
Highlights & What to See
- The Lighthouse Walk: An easy 20-minute return track along a windswept ridge to the 1870 lighthouse. The views from the end are breathtaking, especially at sunrise or sunset.
- Wildlife Spotting: Look for New Zealand fur seals and sea lions lounging on the rocks below. The point is also famous for its colony of yellow-eyed penguins (best seen at dawn or dusk) and various seabirds, including shags and gulls.
- Roaring Bay: A short detour from the main path leads to a hide overlooking Roaring Bay, a prime spot for observing penguins returning from the sea.
- Photography: The interplay of light on the nuggets and the rugged coastline makes this a must for photographers. The lighthouse, often silhouetted against dramatic skies, is an iconic shot.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1–2 hours here, including the walk and time to watch for wildlife. If you're keen on penguin viewing, plan to arrive in the late afternoon and stay until dusk. The site is easily combined with a stop at the nearby Catlins attractions, making it a perfect half-day detour on a South Island road trip.
