Roys Peak is one of New Zealand's most iconic day hikes, offering a relentlessly stunning ascent above Lake Wānaka. The trail climbs steadily up a tussock-covered ridge, rewarding you with ever-expanding views of the lake, the Southern Alps, and the braided Matukituki River. It's a classic for a reason — the summit panorama is the stuff of postcards.
Highlights & What to See
- Summit Viewpoint — the famous photo spot where the lake and mountains frame a perfect V-shaped valley. Arrive early to avoid crowds and capture the morning light.
- Alpine Wildflowers — in spring and early summer, the lower slopes are dotted with mountain daisies and buttercups.
- Lake Wānaka Panorama — the entire hike offers changing perspectives of the lake, from deep blue to turquoise depending on the weather.
- Birdlife — keep an eye out for kea (mountain parrots) near the summit; they're curious and cheeky.
- Roys Peak Track — the well-maintained trail itself is a highlight, switchbacking up through golden tussock with the lake always in view.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most people need 5–6 hours return for the 16 km (10 mi) hike, including time at the summit. Start by 7–8 am to beat the heat and afternoon clouds. If you're a fast walker, you can do it in 4 hours, but allow extra time for photos. The climb is relentless — 1,230 m (4,035 ft) elevation gain — so pace yourself and bring plenty of water.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Wānaka — the lakeside town is just a 15-minute drive away, perfect for pre- or post-hike coffee, brunch, or a swim at the lakefront.
- Mount Aspiring National Park — explore the Rob Roy Glacier Track or the Matukituki Valley for a different alpine experience.
- Glacier Country — a longer day trip to Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers is possible, but plan for a full day on the road.
- Queenstown — an hour’s drive south, offering adventure activities, dining, and the stunning Lake Wakatipu.
- Glenorchy — a charming lakeside village with the start of the Routeburn Track and magical views of the Dart River.
