Rob Roy Glacier Track is one of the most accessible and rewarding day hikes in New Zealand’s South Island. Nestled deep in the Mount Aspiring National Park, this track leads you through ancient beech forest, across swing bridges, and up to a breathtaking view of the Rob Roy Glacier. The roar of distant avalanches and the sight of waterfalls cascading from the glacier’s face will leave you in awe. It’s a must-do for any nature lover passing through the Glenorchy area.
Highlights & What to See
- Rob Roy Glacier Viewpoint – The main payoff after a moderate climb: a sheer glacier face calving into a turquoise lake, with thunderous ice falls echoing across the valley.
- Beech Forest Walk – The trail winds through lush, moss-draped silver beech and red beech, alive with birdlife like fantails and tomtits.
- Swing Bridges – Two thrilling suspension bridges over the Rob Roy Stream, offering close-up views of the rushing water.
- Waterfalls – Several cascades, including a dramatic 100-metre drop near the end, add to the sense of wilderness.
- Mount Aspiring National Park Scenery – The whole valley is framed by jagged peaks and hanging glaciers, making every step a photo opportunity.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most walkers need about 3–4 hours return from the car park, including time to soak in the view at the top. The track is 10 km return with a 500-metre elevation gain. Start early to avoid afternoon cloud cover, which can obscure the glacier. Combine with a morning or afternoon at Glenorchy for a full day out.
