Paradise is a small, remote valley in the heart of New Zealand's South Island, nestled between the Humboldt Mountains and the Dart River. Its name is no exaggeration – this is a landscape of pristine wilderness, where golden tussock grasslands meet ancient beech forests and snow-capped peaks. The area is famously known as the filming location for the Lord of the Rings trilogy, standing in for the peaceful Shire and the wilds of Lothlórien. Here, you'll find absolute quiet, star-filled skies, and a sense of being truly off the grid.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Paradise is best visited as a half-day trip from Glenorchy or Queenstown. A jet boat tour typically takes 3–4 hours, including time to explore the valley. If you're self-driving, allow at least 2–3 hours to soak in the scenery, take photos, and do a short walk. For trampers, the Routeburn Track requires 2–3 days, but you can still experience a taste of the park on a day hike.
