Manapouri, a serene lakeside settlement on the edge of Fiordland National Park, is your gateway to some of New Zealand's most pristine wilderness. With Lake Manapouri, the country's second deepest lake, as its centrepiece, this quiet town offers unparalleled access to Doubtful Sound and the Kepler Track, all without the crowds of Te Anau.
Highlights & What to See
- Doubtful Sound: Take a cruise through this majestic fiord, often described as quieter and more remote than Milford Sound. The journey includes a coach ride over Wilmot Pass and a boat trip past waterfalls, rainforest, and wildlife like dolphins and fur seals.
- Lake Manapouri: Explore the lake's 34 islands by kayak or boat tour. The water is incredibly clear, and the reflections of the surrounding mountains are stunning.
- Kepler Track: This world-renowned Great Walk starts at the lake's edge. Even if you don't have time for the full three-day circuit, a day hike to the Luxmore Hut viewpoint rewards you with panoramic vistas.
- Manapouri Power Station: Take an underground tour of this hydroelectric marvel, built deep within the mountains. The sheer scale of the engineering is impressive.
- Fiordland National Park Visitor Centre: Get expert advice on walks, weather, and wildlife. It's a great starting point for planning your adventures.
Suggested Time to Spend
Manapouri is best as a base for 2–3 days. This allows time for a full-day Doubtful Sound cruise, a half-day on the lake, and a day hike on the Kepler Track. If you're short on time, you can still experience the highlights in one full day by combining a lake cruise with a short walk. For those keen on multi-day tramping, plan 3–4 days for the full Kepler Track circuit.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Te Anau: Just 20 minutes away, this is the main hub for Fiordland, with more accommodation and dining options, plus access to Milford Sound and the Te Anau Glowworm Caves.
- Milford Sound: A scenic 2-hour drive from Manapouri, Milford Sound is a must-see for its dramatic cliffs and waterfalls. Consider an overnight cruise for a quieter experience.
- Glenorchy: While not directly connected, Glenorchy is another lakeside gem worth visiting on your way to or from Queenstown. It offers stunning views of the Dart River and Mount Earnslaw.
- Queenstown: The adventure capital is about 2.5 hours away, perfect for a stop before or after your Fiordland adventure. Enjoy bungee jumping, jet boating, and vibrant dining.
