Nestled in a dramatic river gorge just east of Queenstown, Gibbston Valley is Central Otago's original wine-growing heartland. The cool climate and schist-laced soils produce some of the world's finest Pinot Noir, along with crisp Rieslings and aromatic whites. The valley's intimate cellar doors, many set against a backdrop of craggy cliffs and the Kawarau River, offer a relaxed, unhurried tasting experience that contrasts with the bustle of Queenstown. Self-drivers will love the scenic 25-minute journey from town, winding through the Kawarau Gorge past the historic Kawarau Bridge bungy site.
Highlights & What to See
- Peregrine Wines – Sip award-winning Pinot Noir in a striking subterranean cellar carved into the schist rock, with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the vineyards.
- Gibbston Valley Winery & Cheese – Central Otago's first commercial vineyard, offering tastings paired with local cheeses; don't miss the cave tour.
- Chard Farm – A dramatic drive down a steep gravel road leads to this boutique winery with a vertiginous river view and superb single-vineyard Pinots.
- Mt Rosa Wines – A family-run gem producing small-batch wines; their rosé and Pinot Noir are standouts.
- Wine Trail Cycling – Rent an e-bike from Queenstown or Gibbston and pedal between cellar doors along the flat, scenic Gibbston River Trail.
- Kawarau Gorge Suspension Bridge – The birthplace of commercial bungy jumping; watch jumpers (or take the leap) and soak in the gorge views.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for a half-day (4–5 hours) to visit three to four wineries at a relaxed pace. If you're cycling or want to linger over lunch at one of the cellar doors, allow a full day. The valley is compact, so it's easy to combine with a morning in Queenstown or an afternoon trip to Arrowtown. Most wineries are open from 10am to 5pm, so start early to avoid rushing.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Queenstown – Just 20 minutes west, the adventure capital offers dining, lake cruises, and skyline gondola rides.
- Arrowtown – A charming gold-rush-era town with historic cottages, boutique shops, and the Arrow River Trail.
- Cromwell – Another wine hub with a heritage precinct and the country's largest fruit-growing region.
- Wanaka – An hour's drive via the Crown Range Road, with lakefront walks and the famous #ThatWanakaTree.
- Kawarau River – Beyond bungy, try jet-boating or rafting through the gorge for an adrenaline fix between tastings.
