Nestled in the rugged Kawarau Gorge, Gibbston is New Zealand's most celebrated wine region, a sun-drenched valley carved by the Kawarau River. Known as the 'Valley of the Vines,' this intimate pocket of Central Otago is home to some of the country's finest pinot noir, set against a backdrop of schist rock outcrops and the dramatic turquoise river. For travellers, it's a serene detour between Queenstown and Cromwell, offering cellar doors, cycle trails, and a taste of rural viticulture without the crowds.
Highlights & What to See
- Wine tasting at award-winning cellar doors – Gibbston Valley, Chard Farm, and Peregrine Wines all offer tastings with views over the vines and gorge.
- Gibbston Valley Cheese – Pair local wines with artisan cheeses made on-site; the tasting room is a must for foodies.
- Kawarau Gorge Bungy Centre – The world's first commercial bungy site (AJ Hackett) is just minutes away, perched above the river.
- Cycle the Gibbston River Trail – An easy, scenic ride through vineyards and along the river, part of the Otago Central Rail Trail network.
- Peregrine Wines' architecture – The cellar door is built into a schist rock face, a striking blend of modern design and natural landscape.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a half-day in Gibbston, ideally a leisurely afternoon visiting two or three cellar doors and the cheese shop. If you're cycling the river trail, allow 3–4 hours for the full return trip from the Gibbston Valley winery to the Kawarau Gorge bridge. Wine enthusiasts could easily stretch this to a full day, especially if you add a picnic among the vines.
