Macetown is a hauntingly beautiful ghost town tucked into a narrow gorge of the Arrow River, a short but rugged journey from Arrowtown. Once a thriving gold-mining settlement in the 1860s, today it stands as a near-perfect relic of Otago's gold-rush era, with stone chimneys, collapsed cottages, and rusting machinery slowly being reclaimed by the mountain landscape. Reaching Macetown is an adventure in itself — accessible only by 4WD, mountain bike, or on foot — and the sense of isolation and history is palpable the moment you arrive.
Highlights & What to See
- The Ghost Town Ruins — Wander among the remains of stone cottages, the old schoolhouse, baker's shop, and a historic stamper battery that once crushed quartz for gold. Interpretive panels bring the stories of the 300-odd residents to life.
- Mountain Biking the Macetown Track — This 22 km (one-way) 4WD track from Arrowtown is a classic Otago ride, following the Arrow River through dramatic gorges and across numerous fords. It's challenging but immensely rewarding, with the ghost town as the perfect turnaround point.
- Gold Panning — Try your luck in the Arrow River, just as the miners did. You might not strike it rich, but it's a fun way to connect with the area's history.
- Photography and Solitude — With few visitors, Macetown offers a rare chance to photograph a genuine ghost town without crowds. The light in the late afternoon is particularly magical, casting long shadows over the ruins.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan a full day for the return trip from Arrowtown if you're biking or driving. By mountain bike, allow 4–6 hours round trip depending on fitness and how many river crossings you tackle. By 4WD, allow 2–3 hours driving time each way, plus an hour to explore the town. Walkers should allow 6–8 hours return. Most visitors find that spending 1–2 hours poking around the ruins is enough to soak up the atmosphere.
