Lake Tekapo, a shimmering turquoise gem in the Mackenzie Basin, is one of New Zealand's most photographed natural wonders. The lake's surreal colour comes from glacial 'rock flour' suspended in the water, creating a breathtaking contrast against the surrounding golden tussock hills and snow-capped Southern Alps. This peaceful lakeside settlement offers a perfect blend of stargazing, hot pools, and alpine scenery.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Spend at least one full day and one night to experience both the daytime beauty and the incredible dark-sky stargazing. Arrive early to walk the lakeshore and visit the church, then head up Mount John in the afternoon. After dark, join a stargazing tour or simply look up from the lakeside. If you have more time, a second day allows for a relaxing soak at Tekapo Springs and a short drive to nearby Lake Pukaki.
