Lake Matheson

Lake Matheson, near the tiny settlement of Fox Glacier on the West Coast, is a postcard-perfect mirror lake famous for its reflections of Aoraki/Mount Cook and Mount Tasman. The still, dark waters – coloured by native forest tannins – create flawless mirrored images of New Zealand's highest peaks, especially at dawn on a calm day. A well-maintained loop track circles the lake through ancient kahikatea and rimu forest, offering several viewing platforms that capture the iconic reflections. It's an essential stop on any South Island road trip.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allow 1.5–2 hours for the full loop walk, plus extra time to sit and soak in the reflections. For the best experience, aim to arrive at sunrise (summer around 6–7 am, winter around 7–8 am) when the water is glassy and the crowds are thin. If you're not an early riser, late afternoon can also yield calm conditions. The walk is easy and suitable for most fitness levels.
