Lake Manapouri, in Fiordland National Park, is a deep, glacier-carved lake of startling clarity and beauty. Its waters, studded with over 30 islands, reflect the rugged peaks of the Kepler and Cathedral mountains. This is a place for quiet contemplation and epic wilderness adventures, where the only sounds are birdsong and the lapping of water.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Lake Manapouri is often visited as a day trip from Te Anau (20 minutes drive) or Queenstown (2.5 hours). For a more immersive experience, spend at least two nights: use one full day for a Doubtful Sound cruise (which takes 8–10 hours) and another for a kayak or a section of the Kepler Track. If you're short on time, a half-day lake cruise is still rewarding.
