Spanning the turquoise Kawarau River, this historic bridge is more than just a crossing – it's the birthplace of commercial bungy jumping. A.J. Hackett made his first leap here in 1988, and the adrenaline legacy continues today. Even if you're not jumping, the bridge offers dramatic views of the schist cliffs and the river far below, and you can watch others take the plunge from a viewing platform.
Highlights & What to See
- Bungy Jumping: Take the plunge from the 43-metre-high bridge – the original bungy site, with options to touch the water or go completely dry.
- Viewing Platform: Watch jumpers free-fall and swing over the river; it's free and offers superb photo ops of the gorge.
- Historic Bridge: Built in 1880 for gold miners, the restored suspension bridge is a piece of Otago's gold-rush history.
- Kawarau River: The vivid blue-green water and rugged gorge scenery are stunning from above – bring your camera.
- Nearby Gibbston Valley: Combine your visit with wine tasting in the 'Valley of the Vines', just a short drive away.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 30 minutes to an hour if you're just watching and taking photos. If you're bungy jumping, plan for 1–2 hours including check-in, the jump, and collecting your video. The site is a quick stop on the way between Queenstown and Cromwell, so it fits easily into a day's road trip.
