Haast Township

Haast Township is a tiny settlement on the wild West Coast of New Zealand's South Island, where the Haast River meets the Tasman Sea. It's the gateway to the World Heritage-listed Te Wahipounamu and a crucial stop on the drive between Wanaka and the glaciers. With a population of fewer than 100, this remote outpost offers a genuine frontier feel, surrounded by ancient rainforest, roaring rivers, and rugged coastline.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most travellers pass through Haast in a day, stopping for walks and a meal. If you want to explore the area more deeply, allow two days: one for the coastal walks and Jackson Bay, another for the Haast Pass side trips. The township itself is tiny—you'll only need an hour to see the centre and grab supplies.
