Haast Pass is a dramatic mountain pass that cuts through the Southern Alps, connecting the Otago region to the West Coast. This is one of New Zealand's most scenic drives, winding through ancient rainforests, past turquoise lakes, and over rushing rivers. The road is an adventure in itself, with waterfalls plunging from sheer cliffs and glimpses of snow-capped peaks. It's a journey that feels raw and untamed, offering a true taste of the South Island's wild beauty.
Highlights & What to See
- Thunder Creek Falls – A stunning 28-metre waterfall that plunges into a deep pool, easily accessible via a short walk from the road.
- Fantail Falls – A delicate cascade that fans out over a rock face, perfect for a photo stop and a quick dip on a warm day.
- Blue Pools – Crystal-clear waters fed by glacial melt, with a swingbridge offering incredible views of the river below.
- Gates of Haast – A series of rapids and gorges where the Haast River squeezes through narrow rock channels, best viewed from a short loop track.
- Brewster Track – A challenging day hike that rewards with views of Brewster Glacier and alpine tarns (allow 6–8 hours return).
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers drive the pass in a day, stopping at the key viewpoints and short walks. To fully appreciate the scenery and do a longer hike like the Brewster Track, plan for two days with an overnight stay in Makarora or at one of the DOC campsites. If you're just passing through, allow at least 2–3 hours for the drive from Wanaka to the West Coast, plus extra time for stops.

- Haast Township – The western end of the pass, a tiny town with a visitor centre, fishing charters, and the Haast River Safari.
