Nestled in a dramatic gorge carved by the Kawarau River, Gibbston Valley is Central Otago’s original wine region and the spiritual home of New Zealand Pinot Noir. The valley’s cool climate, schist-rich soils, and long autumn days produce some of the country’s most elegant, complex reds. Beyond the cellar doors, you’ll find historic gold-mining relics, a famous bungy bridge, and a landscape of rocky outcrops and river terraces that feels worlds away from Queenstown, just 20 minutes’ drive west.
Highlights & What to See
- Gibbston Valley Winery & Cheese – The region’s flagship estate offers cellar-door tastings, vineyard tours, and a deli with award-winning local cheeses. Don’t miss their reserve Pinot Noir.
- Peregrine Wines – A stunning architectural cellar door built into a hillside, with a dramatic wing-shaped roof. Their Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir are standouts.
- Chard Farm Winery – Perched on a steep terrace above the river, this boutique producer serves superb cool-climate wines with jaw-dropping views.
- Kawarau Gorge Suspension Bridge – The birthplace of commercial bungy jumping. Watch (or leap) from the 43-metre bridge over the turquoise river.
- Goldfields Mining Centre – Explore historic Chinese gold-mining settlements, water races, and tailings along the Kawarau River.
- Gibbston River Trail – A scenic walking and cycling trail that winds through vineyards and along the river, linking cellar doors and historic sites.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allocate a full day to explore the valley properly. Start mid-morning with a tasting at Gibbston Valley Winery, then cycle or drive to two or three smaller cellar doors like Peregrine and Chard Farm. Break for lunch at the winery’s restaurant or pack a picnic from the cheese shop. Spend an hour at the Goldfields Mining Centre and finish with a thrill at the bungy bridge. If you’re a keen cyclist, the Gibbston River Trail can easily fill an afternoon.
