Franz Josef Glacier is a dramatic river of ice cascading from the Southern Alps into temperate rainforest, offering one of New Zealand's most accessible glacier experiences. The dynamic ice face, surrounded by lush greenery, creates a surreal contrast that has drawn visitors for over a century. Whether you hike to the terminal face or take a heli-hike onto the nevé, the scale and power of this ancient glacier are unforgettable.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend one full day exploring Franz Josef. The valley walk takes 1–2 hours, while a heli-hike tour lasts about 3–4 hours. If you add the hot pools and wildlife centre, plan for a full day. For those short on time, a half-day can cover the valley walk and a quick stop at the hot pools. Overnight stays allow for an early morning Lake Matheson visit before continuing your journey.
