Fiordland National Park is a realm of ancient rainforests, towering granite peaks, and deep, dark fiords carved by glaciers. It's part of Te Wahipounamu, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and offers some of New Zealand's most dramatic wilderness. The park's remote beauty is best experienced by boat, on foot, or from the air, with Milford Sound as its crown jewel.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Plan at least 2–3 full days to experience the park's highlights. One day for a Milford Sound cruise (allow 8–10 hours from Te Anau), another for a shorter walk like Key Summit, and a third for either Doubtful Sound or a longer hike. If you're doing a multi-day tramp like the Routeburn, budget 3–4 days just for that. Summer (Dec–Feb) offers long daylight hours but also crowds; shoulder seasons provide quieter trails and dramatic weather.
