Fiordland National Park is a realm of ancient rainforests, towering granite peaks, and deep, dark fiords carved by glaciers. It's part of Te Wahipounamu, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and offers some of New Zealand's most dramatic wilderness. The park's remote beauty is best experienced by boat, on foot, or from the air, with Milford Sound as its crown jewel.
Highlights & What to See
- Milford Sound – Cruise past waterfalls, seals, and sheer cliffs; the journey via the Homer Tunnel is an adventure itself.
- Doubtful Sound – Larger and quieter than Milford, with a sense of untouched wilderness; accessible only by boat and bus.
- Key Summit Track – A moderate hike from the Hollyford Road offering panoramic views of alpine lakes and peaks.
- Routeburn Track – One of New Zealand's Great Walks, crossing passes and beech forests between Fiordland and Mount Aspiring National Park.
- Lake Manapouri – A serene lake with islands and a gateway to Doubtful Sound; take a scenic cruise or kayak.
- Te Anau Glowworm Caves – A boat trip across Lake Te Anau to see glowworms in limestone caves.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan at least 2–3 full days to experience the park's highlights. One day for a Milford Sound cruise (allow 8–10 hours from Te Anau), another for a shorter walk like Key Summit, and a third for either Doubtful Sound or a longer hike. If you're doing a multi-day tramp like the Routeburn, budget 3–4 days just for that. Summer (Dec–Feb) offers long daylight hours but also crowds; shoulder seasons provide quieter trails and dramatic weather.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Queenstown – An adventure hub 2 hours from Te Anau, with bungee jumping, skiing, and lake cruises.
- Wanaka – A scenic lakeside town with hiking and a relaxed vibe, about 3 hours away.
- Catlins – Rugged coastline with waterfalls, petrified forest, and yellow-eyed penguins, 3–4 hours south.
- Stewart Island – For kiwi spotting and remote beaches, accessible via ferry from Bluff (4 hours drive).
