Dunedin is New Zealand's most Scottish city, where Victorian and Edwardian architecture meets a thriving student vibe and a wild coastline. The city's heart beats around the historic Octagon, while just a short drive away the Otago Peninsula offers penguins, albatross, and dramatic sea views. Dunedin is a place where you can explore a castle, stand on the world's steepest street, and sip a flat white in a converted church — all in one day.
Highlights & What to See
- Otago Peninsula — a wildlife haven where you can spot royal albatross, yellow-eyed penguins, and fur seals against a backdrop of volcanic cliffs and sandy bays. The Royal Albatross Centre at Taiaroa Head is a must.
- Larnach Castle — New Zealand's only castle, a lavish 19th-century mansion with stunning gardens and panoramic views over the peninsula. The ballroom and the surrounding grounds are equally impressive.
- Baldwin Street — officially the world's steepest residential street, a 35-degree gradient that makes for a memorable walk (or a hilarious photo op).
- Dunedin Railway Station — a Flemish Renaissance masterpiece with mosaic floors and stained glass, one of the most photographed buildings in the country.
- Toitū Otago Settlers Museum — a world-class museum telling the story of the region's people, from Māori to Scottish settlers, with interactive exhibits and a classic car collection.
- Cadbury World — a chocolate-lover's tour through the Cadbury factory, complete with a chocolate waterfall and plenty of samples.
Suggested Time to Spend
Spend at least two full days to cover the city's highlights and the Otago Peninsula. Day one can focus on the city centre — the railway station, museums, and Baldwin Street — plus a drive up to Larnach Castle. Day two is best dedicated to the Otago Peninsula: take a wildlife cruise or explore the peninsula's walking trails. If you have a third day, consider a trip to the nearby Moeraki Boulders or a ride on the Taieri Gorge Railway.
