About 40 minutes north of Dunedin, Trotters Gorge is a lush, secluded pocket of native bush that feels a world away from the city. A short walk leads you through dense ferns and towering podocarps to a clear, cool swimming hole beneath a small waterfall – a perfect spot for a dip on a warm day. The gorge is part of a scenic reserve that also offers easy tramping tracks and a chance to spot native birds like tūī and kererū.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend 1–2 hours here: a half-hour walk to the swimming hole, time for a dip and a picnic, then the walk back. It’s an ideal quick nature escape on a road trip between Dunedin and Oamaru, or a lazy afternoon outing from the city. Arrive early on summer weekends to beat the crowds.
