Middlemarch

Middlemarch is a small, sun-baked town at the foot of the Rock and Pillar Range, best known as the southern terminus of the Otago Central Rail Trail. This former gold-rush settlement has a laid-back, frontier feel, with wide streets and a handful of historic buildings. It's the perfect place to stock up on supplies before tackling the trail or to collapse into a well-earned coffee and slice after cycling in from Clyde.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors pass through Middlemarch in a single day, either starting or finishing the Rail Trail. If you're cycling the full trail, plan to arrive in the afternoon and stay overnight – there are several B&Bs and a campsite. For a relaxed visit, allow a couple of hours to explore the museum, grab a bite at the historic pub, and walk a short section of the trail. Stargazers should consider staying until dark.
