Middlemarch is a small, sun-baked town at the foot of the Rock and Pillar Range, best known as the southern terminus of the Otago Central Rail Trail. This former gold-rush settlement has a laid-back, frontier feel, with wide streets and a handful of historic buildings. It's the perfect place to stock up on supplies before tackling the trail or to collapse into a well-earned coffee and slice after cycling in from Clyde.
Highlights & What to See
- Otago Central Rail Trail – New Zealand's premier cycling and walking trail, stretching 150 km from Clyde to Middlemarch. The final section offers stunning views of the Strath Taieri plain.
- Middlemarch Museum – Housed in the old post office, this small museum tells the story of the gold rush, railways, and early farming life.
- Rock and Pillar Range – A dramatic, rocky escarpment that provides a backdrop for short hikes and wildflower spotting in spring.
- Taieri River Gorge – A scenic drive or cycle along the gorge, with opportunities for trout fishing and picnicking.
- Strath Taieri – The broad, braided river valley surrounding Middlemarch, ideal for birdwatching and stargazing (part of the Dark Sky Reserve).
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors pass through Middlemarch in a single day, either starting or finishing the Rail Trail. If you're cycling the full trail, plan to arrive in the afternoon and stay overnight – there are several B&Bs and a campsite. For a relaxed visit, allow a couple of hours to explore the museum, grab a bite at the historic pub, and walk a short section of the trail. Stargazers should consider staying until dark.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Otago Peninsula – A 90-minute drive east, this wildlife haven offers albatross colonies, penguins, and sealions, plus the historic Larnach Castle.
- Larnach Castle – New Zealand's only castle, set in beautiful gardens on the Otago Peninsula, about 1.5 hours away.
- Baldwin Street – The world's steepest residential street, in Dunedin, an easy day trip from Middlemarch.
