Twizel is a small, purpose-built town in the Mackenzie Basin, surrounded by the dramatic landscapes of the Southern Alps and braided rivers. It serves as a gateway to Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park and the Waitaki hydro lakes, offering a quiet base for outdoor adventures with a surprisingly good food scene.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend 1–2 nights in Twizel, using it as a base for exploring Mount Cook and the lakes. A full day is enough for a Hooker Valley walk and a salmon stop, but add an extra day if you want to bike the Alps 2 Ocean or do a scenic flight. The town itself is small, so you'll likely use it for accommodation and meals.
