Treble Cone is Wanaka’s big-mountain playground, a South Island giant that lures experienced skiers and snowboarders with its vast, open bowls, long groomed cruisers, and some of the most breathtaking lake-and-mountain views in New Zealand. Perched above Lake Wanaka and surrounded by the Southern Alps, this field feels wild and untamed, yet the lift system is modern and efficient. It’s a place where advanced riders can spend days exploring off-piste chutes and wide powder fields, while intermediates have plenty of long, scenic blue runs to enjoy.
Highlights & What to See
- Home Basin & Saddle Basin: Two distinct areas linked by a saddle – Home Basin offers wide, groomed runs and a relaxed vibe, while Saddle Basin opens up steep, challenging terrain and deep powder stashes for advanced skiers.
- The Motatapu Chutes: Famous among powder hounds, these north-facing chutes hold snow for days after a storm and offer steep, technical lines with incredible views over the Motatapu Valley.
- Scenic chairlift rides: The Summit Chair delivers panoramic views of Lake Wanaka, Mount Aspiring, and the Southern Alps – a photo op that rivals the skiing itself.
- Off-piste terrain: Treble Cone is renowned for its backcountry-style access; guided skiing is available for those wanting to explore the vast sidecountry safely.
- Après-ski at the base: The base lodge has a sunny deck and a lively bar, perfect for reliving the day’s runs with a cold beer and a mountain-view sunset.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors dedicate a full day to Treble Cone, as the drive from Wanaka (about 35 minutes) and the size of the ski area warrant a full day on the slopes. If you’re a strong skier, two days allows you to explore both basins thoroughly and chase the best snow. The field opens late June to early October, but midwinter (July–August) offers the most reliable conditions. Arrive early to secure a car park and make the most of the morning light.
