Rob Roy Glacier Track is a premier day hike in Mount Aspiring National Park, offering an up-close encounter with a hanging glacier and cascading waterfalls. The track winds through lush beech forest, crosses a swingbridge over the Matukituki River, and climbs to a rocky lookout where the glacier's icy face and thunderous meltwater falls dominate the scene. It's a classic Wanaka-area walk that rewards with dramatic alpine scenery.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allow a full half-day for the return hike: typically 3–4 hours walking time (10 km return), plus extra time for photo stops and a picnic at the lookout. The track is well-graded but has some steep sections, so plan to start early to avoid afternoon cloud cover that can obscure the glacier. Most visitors combine this with a morning or afternoon in Wanaka town.
