If you’ve come to New Zealand to push your limits, Nevis Bungy is the ultimate leap of faith. Suspended 134 metres above the Nevis River canyon floor, this is the highest bungy jump in the country – and one of the most spectacular. The ride to the jump platform is an adventure in itself: a 4WD bus rattles along a dusty gravel road, then you’re winched across the gorge in a tiny cable car. Once you’re standing on the edge, with nothing but air and a dizzying drop below, the world goes silent. Then you jump. The freefall lasts a heart-stopping 8.5 seconds, and the rebound swings you over the river like a human pendulum. It’s terrifying, exhilarating, and utterly unforgettable.
Highlights & What to See
- 134-Metre Bungy Jump – The main event: a sheer drop into a remote canyon, with the option to go solo or tandem (if you’re brave enough to take a friend).
- Nevis Canyon Views – Even if you’re not jumping, the platform offers jaw-dropping panoramas of the schist-rock gorge and the ribbon of river far below.
- AJ Hackett Bungy Centre – The Kawarau Bridge site (the world’s first commercial bungy) is a 20-minute drive away; combine both for the ultimate bungy pilgrimage.
- Gibston Valley Wineries – After the adrenaline, soothe your nerves with a wine tasting at nearby vineyards like Peregrine or Mt Difficulty.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for a half-day trip from Queenstown or Cromwell. The entire experience – from check-in to jump and return – takes about 3–4 hours, including the scenic drive and cable-car ride. If you’re just spectating, budget 1–2 hours. Most people jump in the morning when winds are calmer, leaving the afternoon for exploring Cromwell’s heritage trail or relaxing by Lake Dunstan.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Cromwell – The historic gold-mining town is only 20 minutes away; wander Old Cromwell Town, sample stonefruit from roadside stalls, and visit the Cromwell Museum.
- Queenstown – The adventure capital, 45 minutes south, offers endless activities from skydiving to lake cruises, plus a buzzing dining scene.
- Wanaka – A scenic hour’s drive north, with lakefront walks, the famous Wanaka Tree, and the challenging Roy’s Peak Track.
- Kawarau Gorge – Home to the historic Kawarau Bridge Bungy and excellent whitewater rafting, just 15 minutes from the Nevis turn-off.
