Perched on the rocky slopes of the Cromwell Basin, Mt Difficulty Winery offers one of Central Otago's most dramatic tasting-room views. The name says it all: the steep, north-facing terraces make for challenging viticulture but produce some of New Zealand's most celebrated Pinot Noir, along with elegant Chardonnay and aromatic whites. The modern cellar door, with its floor-to-ceiling glass and expansive deck, feels suspended above the patchwork of vines and the Kawarau River far below.
Highlights & What to See
- Cellar door tasting: Sample the flagship Pinot Noir, the crisp Bannockburn Gold Riesling, and the seasonal ‘Roaring Meg’ range – the knowledgeable staff guide you through each wine’s story.
- Platter lunch on the deck: Pair a glass of wine with a locally sourced platter of cheeses, cured meats, and Central Otago stone fruit while soaking up the panoramic vista across the valley.
- Vineyard walk: A short self-guided trail loops through the estate, with informative signs explaining the region’s unique climate, soil, and the challenges of growing grapes on ‘Mt Difficulty’.
- Photography spot: The elevated deck and the surrounding rows of vines, especially in autumn when the leaves turn gold and crimson, create postcard-perfect shots.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allocate around 1–1.5 hours for a relaxed tasting and a glass on the deck. If you’re adding a platter lunch, plan for 2 hours. The winery is a natural stopover on a day trip from Cromwell or Queenstown, so you can easily fit it into a self-drive itinerary without feeling rushed.
