New Zealand's most celebrated multi-day hike, the Milford Track carves through Fiordland National Park, weaving past thundering waterfalls, ancient beech forests, and mirror-calm lakes. This 53.5 km (33 mi) journey from Lake Te Anau to Milford Sound is a pilgrimage for trekkers, offering a front-row seat to some of the country's most dramatic landscapes. The track is best walked in the Great Walks season (late October to late April), when the weather is more settled and the iconic Clinton and Arthur valleys are lush with alpine blooms.
Highlights & What to See
- Mackinnon Pass – The track's high point (1,154 m / 3,786 ft) delivers panoramic views of Fiordland's razor-sharp peaks and the Clinton Valley far below. On a clear day, it's a heart-stopping moment.
- Sutherland Falls – At 580 m (1,904 ft), this is one of the tallest waterfalls in New Zealand. Feel the spray from the viewing platform as the water plunges from Lake Quill.
- Clinton Valley – The first day's walk follows the serene Clinton River, with towering cliffs rising on either side. It's a gentle start that builds anticipation.
- Giant Gate Falls – A powerful waterfall near the end of the track, where you can take a final, refreshing dip in the plunge pool (if you're brave enough).
- Milford Sound – The grand finale: the track ends at Sandfly Point, where a boat ferries you across the sound. Time your finish for a late-afternoon cruise to see the fiord in its best light.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most walkers complete the Milford Track in four days and three nights, staying at DOC huts (book well in advance). This allows a steady pace: two days to reach the pass, one summit day, and a final descent to the sound. If you're short on time, you can day-hike sections from either end, but the full experience is best savoured. Fit trampers can finish in three days, but that's a rushed affair. Add an extra day at Milford Sound for a kayak tour or scenic flight back to Queenstown.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Te Anau – The gateway town for the track, with lakefront walks, glowworm caves, and a great base for stocking up on supplies.
- Milford Sound – Beyond the track's end, spend a day cruising the fiord, spotting seals and dolphins, or taking a flight over the alpine peaks.
- Routeburn Track – Another Great Walk that connects to the Milford via the Greenstone and Caples valleys, ideal for a longer expedition.
- Kepler Track – A three-day loop from Te Anau with lake and mountain views, a fine alternative if you can't secure Milford bookings.
- Queenstown – The adventure hub, just 2.5 hours from Te Anau, offers bungee jumping, jet boating, and world-class dining to unwind after the trek.
