Milford Sound is the crown jewel of Fiordland National Park, a dramatic fiord carved by glaciers and often shrouded in mist. The journey here is as epic as the destination, with the Milford Road winding through alpine meadows, ancient beech forests, and the Homer Tunnel. Once you arrive, sheer cliffs rise from dark waters, and waterfalls cascade hundreds of metres down. Take a cruise to get up close to Mitre Peak, seals, and dolphins, or kayak in the stillness for a truly immersive experience.
Highlights & What to See
- Cruise Milford Sound – The classic way to experience the fiord, gliding past waterfalls like Stirling and Bowen Falls, with chances to spot fur seals and bottlenose dolphins.
- Milford Road (SH 94) – One of the world’s most scenic drives, with stops at Mirror Lakes, the Chasm, and the Homer Tunnel. Allow at least 2 hours each way from Te Anau.
- Kayaking – Paddle beneath towering cliffs in a small group, offering a silent, up-close perspective that cruises can’t match.
- Milford Track – New Zealand’s most famous Great Walk, a 4-day trek from Glade Wharf to Sandfly Point, ending at the fiord. Book well in advance.
- Scenic flights – See the fiord from above, often combined with a cruise for a complete experience. Flights depart from Queenstown and Te Anau.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a full day on a cruise and drive from Te Anau (2 hours each way). For a deeper experience, stay overnight in Milford Sound (limited accommodation) or in Te Anau and take a morning cruise followed by an afternoon kayak. Hikers should budget 4 days for the Milford Track. If you’re short on time, a scenic flight from Queenstown is the quickest way to see the fiord – but you’ll miss the road.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Te Anau – The gateway to Milford Sound, with the stunning Te Anau Glowworm Caves and Lake Te Anau. A perfect overnight stop before or after your fiord visit.
- Doubtful Sound – A quieter, larger fiord accessible only by boat and bus from Manapouri. Combine for a longer Fiordland adventure.
- Queenstown – The adventure capital, 4 hours’ drive from Milford. Add bungy jumping, jet boating, or wine tours in Central Otago.
- Wanaka – A scenic 3-hour drive from Te Anau, offering lake views, hiking, and the famous Wanaka Tree.
