Lake Pukaki is a breathtaking turquoise lake in the Mackenzie Basin, fed by the Tasman River and the Tasman Glacier. Its vivid milky-blue colour, caused by glacial flour suspended in the water, contrasts dramatically with the surrounding golden tussock hills and the majestic Aoraki/Mount Cook in the distance. This is one of New Zealand’s most photographed lakes, and it's a must-stop on any South Island road trip.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

You can appreciate Lake Pukaki in as little as 30 minutes for a quick photo stop, but allow 1–2 hours if you want to walk to the Tasman Glacier viewpoint or enjoy a salmon lunch. If you're driving from Twizel to Mount Cook Village, plan to stop here both ways – the light changes throughout the day, offering different hues of blue.
