Lake Pukaki is a breathtaking turquoise lake in the Mackenzie Basin, fed by the Tasman River and the Tasman Glacier. Its vivid milky-blue colour, caused by glacial flour suspended in the water, contrasts dramatically with the surrounding golden tussock hills and the majestic Aoraki/Mount Cook in the distance. This is one of New Zealand’s most photographed lakes, and it's a must-stop on any South Island road trip.
Highlights & What to See
- Glacial blue waters and Aoraki/Mount Cook views – The lake’s colour is surreal, especially on a sunny day. The classic photo spot is from the Peter’s Lookout viewpoint on State Highway 80.
- Mount Cook Alpine Salmon farm shop – Sample some of the world’s freshest salmon, raised in the pure glacial waters. The shop sits right by the lake, offering tastings and takeaways.
- Lake Pukaki Lookout – A short walk from the car park provides panoramic views over the lake towards the Southern Alps.
- Tasman Glacier Viewpoint – A short walk from the Tasman Valley car park leads to a viewpoint over the terminal lake of the Tasman Glacier, with icebergs often floating in the water.
- Stargazing – The area is part of the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve, offering incredible night skies.
Suggested Time to Spend
You can appreciate Lake Pukaki in as little as 30 minutes for a quick photo stop, but allow 1–2 hours if you want to walk to the Tasman Glacier viewpoint or enjoy a salmon lunch. If you're driving from Twizel to Mount Cook Village, plan to stop here both ways – the light changes throughout the day, offering different hues of blue.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
