Lake Manapouri, cradled in Fiordland National Park, is a serene masterpiece of deep blue waters, forested islands, and granite peaks. Often called New Zealand's most beautiful lake, it offers a quieter alternative to Milford Sound while providing equally dramatic scenery. Its name means 'sorrowful heart' in Māori, but the experience here is anything but – expect awe-inspiring tranquility.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors allocate a full day for a Doubtful Sound cruise, which includes lake crossing and sound exploration. If you prefer self-guided exploration, spend at least half a day walking short tracks and enjoying the lakefront. For a relaxed pace, stay overnight in Manapouri township – it's a quiet base with a few cafés and lodges. Combine with Te Anau (20 minutes north) for longer Fiordland adventures.
