The Kawarau River cuts a dramatic path through Central Otago, its milky turquoise waters fed by the glaciers of the Southern Alps. This is a landscape of stark beauty — schist rock outcrops, golden tussock, and the ever-present rush of water carving through steep gorges. For travellers, it's the adrenaline artery of the region, home to the world's first commercial bungee site and a magnet for jet-boat thrill-seekers, yet it also offers gentler pursuits like gold-panning and riverside walks.
Highlights & What to See
- Kawarau Gorge Suspension Bridge — The birthplace of commercial bungee jumping (AJ Hackett's original site). Even if you don't jump, the vertiginous views of the river 43 metres below are spine-tingling.
- Jet-boat rides — High-speed spins through the narrow gorge, skimming rock walls and spinning 360 degrees. Several operators run trips from the bridge area.
- Gold-panning — Try your luck at the historic goldfields along the river. The Kawarau was a major gold-rush site in the 1860s, and you can still find flecks of gold in the gravel.
- Kawarau River Walk — A short, easy track from the bungee site follows the riverbank, offering photo opportunities of the dramatic cliffs and swirling water.
- Wine region views — The lower Kawarau valley is dotted with vineyards (part of the Gibbston wine sub-region). Many cellar doors offer tastings with river views.
- Notable places within: Kawarau Gorge, Gibbston Valley, Bannockburn Sluicings.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1–2 hours at the Kawarau Gorge Suspension Bridge to watch bungee jumps and take a short walk. If you add a jet-boat ride or wine tasting, allow half a day. For a fuller experience — combining a bungee jump, jet boat, and a visit to nearby Gibbston Valley wineries — set aside a full day. The river is best visited between late spring and early autumn (October to April) when the weather is settled and the road is clear.
