Kawarau Gorge Bridge is a historic suspension bridge spanning the dramatic Kawarau River, famous as the world's first commercial bungee jumping site. Since AJ Hackett launched jumps here in 1988, it has become an iconic bucket-list stop for adrenaline seekers and sightseers alike. The bridge itself, built in 1880 to transport gold miners, offers stunning views of the turquoise river and schist rock cliffs — a perfect photo op even if you don't leap.
Highlights & What to See
- Bungee Jumping: Take the plunge from 43 metres above the Kawarau River — you can even touch the water on the way down.
- Bridge Walk & Viewing Platform: Walk across the historic bridge for free and watch jumpers from the dedicated viewing area.
- Kawarau River Scenery: The gorge's striking turquoise water and rugged cliffs are a photographer's dream.
- Gold Mining History: Interpretive signs explain the bridge's role in the 19th-century gold rush.
- Nearby Wineries: Combine your visit with a wine tasting at Gibbston Valley Winery or Chard Farm, both a short drive away.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 30–60 minutes here — enough to watch a few jumps, snap photos, and soak in the scenery. If you're jumping, allow an extra hour for check-in, harness fitting, and the adrenaline rush itself. It's a quick stop that easily fits into a day trip from Queenstown or Cromwell.
