Haast Pass

Haast Pass is one of New Zealand's most dramatic mountain crossings, threading through the Southern Alps between Wanaka and the West Coast. The road climbs through ancient beech forest, past waterfalls and braided rivers, before descending into the wild rainforest of Haast. This is a journey of stark contrasts: dry, golden tussock on one side, lush, moss-draped greenery on the other. The pass itself is a gateway to some of the South Island's most remote and pristine landscapes, and the drive is an experience in itself, with countless pull-offs for short walks and photo stops.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Driving Haast Pass from Wanaka to the West Coast (or vice versa) takes about 1.5 hours without stops, but you should budget at least half a day to fully appreciate the walks and viewpoints. If you're a keen hiker or photographer, a full day allows you to explore several short trails and linger at the highlights. Most travellers combine it with a stay in Wanaka or Haast, making it a scenic half-day transit.
